May enterprising latinas.jpg

Enterprising Latinas, Inc. is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Wimauma that creates pathways of economic opportunity for women in Tampa Bay. During our meeting they will present their "Latinas Can't Wait" campaign to expand the understanding of the current economic status of Latina women in Tampa Bay, since they are the lowest paid workers in the U.S. economy and in Tampa Bay. We will discuss multiple ways in which the community can support how we reimagine solutions to promote economic prosperity for the half-a-million Latina women living in the Tampa Bay region.

Also at the May meeting (Voter Registration)

We will discuss Voter Registration – how vital it is to Democrats’ ability to win elections ranging from President, Senate and State offices down to local County Commissioners and School Board members. Both the State Democratic Party and the Hillsborough County Democrats have made registering Democrats to vote the Number One priority for the foreseeable future.  We’ll learn how we in the SSDC can participate in the most constructive manner.

President's Message - April 2024

The South Shore Democrats are ‘officially’ number one.  At the Spring Fling event  Saturday night, Ione Townsend, the Chair of the Hillsborough County Democratic Party, honored the South Shore Democratic Club as being the largest, fastest growing, and most active club in the Hillsborough County Democratic Party.

Ione presented the 2024 Chair’s award to your President.

Overwhelmed and honored, I accepted this award on behalf of our officers,  board of directors and our members.

The South Shore Democrats are on the move. The polls do not favor Biden at the moment, but I have no doubt that will change as we get closer to the election.  The April 1st decision by the Florida Supreme Court to allow Proposition 4 (Reproductive Rights) to appear on the November ballot is a game changer.  The Democrats are on the right side of issues that will impact all Americans, such as protecting women’s reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, free speech, voter rights, climate change, education, infrastructure, gun safety, etc.  President Biden’s administration has worked tirelessly to increase production of goods, reduce inflation, protect healthcare, reduce the cost of drugs, fight for worker’s rights, etc.

As we know all, Politics is local, therefore, we must push for an enormous turnout to save Commissioner Pat Kemp’s at-large seat in the County Commission, since she is termed out, show Senator Rick Scott the door, support and retain  school Board members Lynn Gray, Karen Perez, Nadia Combs, and elect Bonnie Lambert in District 3. We also will do what it takes to re-elect Supervisor of Elections, Craig Latimer, Clerk of the Circuit Court Cindy Stuart Property Appraiser Bob (Coach) Hernandez, and Tax Collector Nancy Milan, as well as support the Democratic candidate for the Public Defender’s office.

At the Spring Fling, Pat Kemp announced that she is running for Congressional District 15. Needless to say, she will have our full support.

All candidates are always welcome to come to our meetings.

The month of April is devoted to Voter registration.  Thanks to board members Bonnie Tandet, Debbie Anderson and Pam Fisher, and numerous members of the South Shore Democratic Club, there are now more than ten tabling events for voter registration, with more to come, as well as voter registration training, both in person and virtual.

All you need to do is register on mobilize.  For registration at El Sol Restaurant in Wimauma, go to https://www.mobilize.us/hillsboroughcountydec/event/615126/.  Check out our website for additional upcoming events.  Remember we are IN IT TO WIN.

Yours,
Fran

Listen to the Podcast Rachel Maddow Presents: Déjà News

Long before Governor Ron DeSantis declared a new war on wokeness, Florida lawmakers in the 1950s and 60s tried going after the NAACP, suspected communists and gay people in Florida schools and universities. The lawmakers upended life for countless numbers of their fellow Floridians before being upended themselves by their own zeal for the cause. Now that DeSantis is bringing this playbook to a presidential campaign, Rachel Maddow and Isaac-Davy Aronson ask what we can learn from the last time Florida went down this path.Apple Podcasts Preview
